The recent unilateral decision by Seattle Parks and Recreation to add wire mesh screening to the fencing of the Lily Ponds in Volunteer Park must be reversed. Parks states that this was done “as a temporary solution to keep the ducks out,” however ducks fly — and adult ducks can still access the pond, create nests, and hatch ducklings. The ducklings, however, now cannot escape the pond.
Volunteer Park Trust went through a years-long review process to have our Olmsted-based design for the Lily Pond fencing approved by both SPR and Seattle’s Landmarks Preservation Board. The design specifically allows ducklings to pass through the fence. This “solution” by SPR is short-sighted, ineffective, and unsightly. Read more at the CHS Seattle Blog.
