Rarities fit for kings: ephemeral and tangible precious goods in Sultanate India

Emma Flatt / University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Emma Flatt introduces our series theme “What is Precious?” through court life in medieval sultanates in the Deccan Plateau (western and southern India). She will discuss their valued jewelry, swords, carpets, textiles, and slaves, as well as precious ephemera, such as scent, and the forms of knowledge and skills that were prized among courtiers.

About the Presenter

Emma Flatt is Associate Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London. Her forthcoming book explores the world of courtiers who moved across regions and between courts in search of generous patrons. It focuses on three different “knowledges” that helped a courtier attain success: letter-writing, wrestling, and astrology. Currently she is a fellow at the National University of Singapore.

Please note: This event takes place at the Seattle Art Museum. South Hall doors open at 9:30 am.
